Monday Morning Meeting Notes (08/14/2023)

General Info:

• U.S. inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI), was broadly in line with expectations in July
• CPI grew 0.2% month-over-month and 3.2% year-over-year (vs. last month’s readings of 0.2% and 3.0%, respectively)
• Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, increased 0.2% month-over-month and 4.7% year-over-year (vs. last month’s readings of 0.2% and 4.8%, respectively)
• Shelter accounted for 90% of July’s inflation as it rose 0.4% month-over-month and has risen 5.7% year-over-year; on a positive note, the pace of shelter’s cost increases is now moderating

• Fun Fact: In 2010, Mike “The Pancake Man” Cuzzacrea set the world record for the highest pancake flip at 10.8 feet (329 centimeters). Feels beatable – you can find me practicing by a basketball hoop this week
• The Pancake Man also ran a marathon in 1999 in Buffalo, New York while flipping a pancake. He finished the race in just over 3 hours, and it’s been estimated that he flipped a pancake every 1.8 seconds during the race
