General Info:

  • Headline and Core CPI both grew more than expected in August (0.1% and 0.6%, respectively), which led to year-over-year Headline and Core CPI increasing to 8.3% and 6.3%, respectively
  • The main concern remains the broad nature of the increase and the continued growth of the “sticky” components, which led to the market declining last week
  • Fun Fact: Mick Jagger and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin were both pursuing accounting degrees at the London School of Economics before their music careers took off
  • Fun Fact II: Scotland has 421 words for snow. Examples include sneesl (to start raining or snowing), feefle (to swirl), and flinkdrinkin (a light snow)

 

Monday 09/19:

  • Japan CPI data (released at 7:30pm EST Monday night)
  • Headline and Core CPI are expected to be 2.9% and 1.5% year-over-year, respectively

 

Tuesday 09/20:

  • U.S. housing starts
  • Taiwan export orders
  • Germany PPI data for August is expected to show inflation of 2.4% month-over-month and inflation of 36.8% year-over-year

 

Wednesday 09/21:

  • FOMC monetary policy decision and press conference by Jerome Powell
  • The U.S. central bank is expected to raise interest rates by 0.75%, which would bring the fed funds rate to a target of 3.00-3.25%  
  • Bank CEOs testify before the U.S. House Financial Services Committee at a hearing titled, “Holding Megabanks Accountable”
  • U.S. existing home sales for August

 

Thursday 09/22:

  • Bank of England monetary policy decision
  • The decision was delayed by a week due to the Queen’s death
  • Futures markets are split between a 0.50% and a 0.75% rate hike
  • Bank of Japan monetary policy decision
  • Eurozone consumer confidence
  • U.S. Conference Board leading index
  • Bank CEOs testify before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee

 

Friday 09/23:

  • Autumn Equinox, which marks the first day of autumn in the northern hemisphere and the first day of spring in the southern hemisphere
  • S&P Global Manufacturing PMI data for the U.S., Eurozone, Germany, France, U.K., and Australia
  • S&P Global Services PMI data for the U.S., Eurozone, Germany, France, U.K., and Australia
