General Info:

  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sued to block Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard due to antitrust concerns
  • Fun Fact: John Lloyd Wright, the son of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, invented Lincoln Logs. Inspiration struck in 1916 as he based the idea off one of his father’s designs – the earthquake-proof Imperial Hotel in Tokyo


Monday 12/12:

  • U.K. industrial production
  • Japan producer price index (PPI)


Tuesday 12/13:

  • U.S. consumer price index (CPI) data for November
  • CPI is expected to have grown 0.3% month-over-month and 7.3% year-over-year
  • Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is expected to have grown 0.3% month-over-month and 6.1% year-over-year
  • NFIB Small Business Optimism Index for November
  • The Bank of England (BOE) releases its financial stability report


Wednesday 12/14:

  • The U.S. Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) holds its monetary policy meeting
  • The FOMC is expected to raise rates by 0.50% (a slowdown from the previous 0.75% rate hikes), which would bring the fed funds target rate to a range of 4.25-4.50%
  • Chairman Jerome Powell will hold a press conference after the rate decision is announced
  • U.K. CPI data for November


Thursday 12/15:

  • The European Central Bank (ECB) conducts its monetary policy meeting
  • The ECB is expected to raise rates by 0.50%, which would bring its main refinancing operations rate to 2.50%
  • ECB President Christine Lagarde holds a press conference after the rate decision is announced
  • The Bank of England (BOE) conducts its monetary policy meeting
  • The BOE is expected to raise rates by 0.50%, bringing its official bank rate to 3.50%
  • China medium-term lending, property prices, retail sales, industrial production, and unemployment data
  • U.S. retail sales and industrial production data for November


Friday 12/16:

  • U.S. deadline for a new funding deal to avert a federal government shutdown
  • Financial market volume is expected to surge as this is a “triple witching” day (a quarterly occurrence)
  • “Triple witching” takes place when the expiry of stock options, index options, and index futures all occur on the same day
  • S&P Global Manufacturing PMI data for the U.S., Eurozone, U.K., France, Germany, and Australia
  • S&P Global Services PMI data for the U.S., Eurozone, U.K., France, Germany, and Australia
